A gunman opened fire on the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in the early morning of Dec. 4 as he exited a Midtown Manhattan hotel, killing the 50-year-old executive in what police described as a targeted attack. UnitedHealth Group, which provides coverage for more than 34 million people globally, was hosting its annual conference for analysts and investors at the hotel. According to reports citing law enforcement sources, investigators and security at UnitedHealthcare are searching files for suspects, including previous threats and disgruntled or recently fired workers. Because the tragedy might cause some organizations to wonder if their executive protection is aligned with threats or if risks have outpaced security measures, the Ligue has compiled a checklist to help identify possible gaps (see the Factsheets, Tools & Resources section in our Download Library).
An organization may have an ‘executive protection plan’ in place, but time and technology can create new vulnerabilities. What is needed is a security process and partners that make an organization capable of adjusting to changing risks.
